Course Description

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The goal of the AFJROTC program is for cadets to incorporate the values of Respect, Dedication, Teamwork, Self-discipline, and Service in all aspects of their daily lives. The mission of AFJROTC is to “Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community."

Primary Instructor: MSgt McDonough ([email protected])

The components and the respective weights of the Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) curriculum are listed below. Each component is taught concurrently throughout the school year:

  • Aeroscience (AS)                                 40%
  • Leadership Education (LE)      40%
  • Physical Fitness (PT)                            20%.

AEROSCIENCE 4 is intended for cadets enrolled in their fourth year of the AFJROTC program. As with all AFJROTC courses, enrollment is voluntary and should not be construed as a disciplinary tool nor should a student be enrolled without their consent. With successful completion of the course, cadets receive elective or Physical Education credit toward the fulfillment of graduation requirements.  There is NO MILITARY OBLIGATION, nor should this course be considered a ‘recruiting tool’ for the military.

This is a 'Seminar' style class where the students will be responsible for communicating the information to each other. They will be assigned sections of the textbook and evaluated on their presentations and with a final test that will cover all of the material covered during the semester.

AEROSCIENCE 4 focuses on the following areas:

  • Exploring Space: The High Frontier - The course begins with the study of the space environment from the earliest days of interest in astronomy and early ideas of the heavens, through the Renaissance, and on into modern astronomy. It provides an in-depth study of the Earth, Sun, stars, Moon, and Solar System, including the terrestrial and the outer planets. It discusses issues critical to travel in the upper atmosphere, unmanned satellites, and space probes. It investigates the importance of entering space and discusses manned and unmanned missions, focusing on concepts surrounding spaceflight, space vehicles, launch systems, and safety.
  • Principals of Management – This course of study teaches fundamental concepts of management. Students will explore concepts through projects and research to help them lead the Cadet Corps and prepare them for life after high school.
  • Cadets will participate in an exercise program led and designed by senior cadets each week.  The Wellness program’s goal is for all cadets to pass the AFJROTC Physical Fitness Test.

Prerequisites: AEROSCIENCE 3 or instructor approval.
