Basic Photo Editing
Student Instructions
GOAL:
The goal of this lesson is to give the student a solid familiarity with Photoshop and some of its most fundamental features and tools.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this lesson, student will be able to:
- Know how to Open, Save, and Close image files in Photoshop
- Know how to Crop and Resize Images, and a have basic understanding of the key elements of those features.
- Be introduced to the basics of Layers
- Begin to develop best practice work habits for PSD file organization
- Be introduced to the basics of image color correction.
- Be introduced to filters.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Use a photo that:
- Is larger, and/or a high resolution (preferably 300 dpi) and can be reduced without significant loss of quality.
- You have the right to edit and manipulate.
- That has not previously been retouched or edited.
- Create a “4 up” page in Photoshop of you image
- Landscape or Portrait Orientation as Best Suits the Image
- With a ¼” border around all 4 images as per example
- Maintain a clean copy of the original image
- Create duplicate layers of the original image
- 1 layer per version image including the original.
- The original should be on a hidden and locked layer
- The 4 images
- Resize, and Crop (as benefits the image) the original.
- A corrected/adjusted improvement on the original
- An altered version of the original. Using Tools/Filters
- An altered version of the corrected version. Using Tools/Filters
EVALUATION:
Student work will be evaluated based on the following criteria.
- Did the student follow all of the instructions for the project.
- Does the final submission include 4 images on a single “4up” page
- Is the “4 up” formatted properly with borders
- Did the student use an image that they have the rights to use.
- Effectiveness
- Does the corrected, edited 2nd image look better, or improve on the original
- Do the altered 3rd and 4th images, also add something to the image to change how is it perceived.
