Welcome to Health Education Spring Semester.

This class will include units on  Nutrition, Medicine, Tobacco, & Alcohol, Disease identification and prevention, and Sex Education.

All classwork and homework are collected approximately every 2-3 weeks in a packet..

 I also encourage you to take advantage of the Quizlet links to help you prepare for tests and quizzes.

Our last unit of instruction is Sex Education. 
A parent letter was sent home with your student the week of May 5.
This unit contains information on the Reproductive Systems, Pregnancy & Childbirth,
Abstinence and Birth Control and STD's including HIV and AIDS.
Quiz dates are to be announced as we are still finishing up Oral Presentations and
so the timeline will vary.
The final exam will be based on class notes, discussions, and activities.
Although reading the text is encouraged for reinforcement all test questions will come
from notes and class activities as I will be collecting student textbooks the week of
June 2-6.

Oral Presentations are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 5
Visual Aides that use technology should be checked for compatibility before the
assigned presentation date. 
I attached a grading rubric for the Oral Presentation and the Visual Aide.
Although we will continue presentations the week of May 12, we will only have a few presentations each day and we will continue with regular curriculum instruction.

The medicine, tobacco, and alcohol unit will include information on different types and uses for medicine, medicine interractions, how to interpret a medicine label and we will also be discussing the impact of tobacco products and alcohol on our health and strategies to avoid harmful situations.

Our fourth unit of instruction is Post Secondary Options.
In this unit we will be exploring college options, trade and technical schools, military service and career options.  The Esperanza Counseling Staff will visit our class and guide the students through a 4 year plan for high school as well as presenting options for continuing their education after high school.

Our third unit of instruction is Self Assessment.
We will participate in a variety of activities that will help us to identify
our interests, values, and current skills.
 
This unit will not have a formal quiz or test.
 
We will however be registering for a program called K-Navigator which will
help the students develop an academic plan for the next four years of high school
and will also allow them to obtain information about a variety of post secondary
options and career paths.  On Wednesday, October 30th in the Esperanza Library,
we will register for the program and participate in three short surveyswhich will help
the students identify interests and career values.  If students are absent on October 30th
they will have to complete this assignment at home.
 
Packet 3 is due on Tuesday, November 5th.
The K-Navigator Activity is worth 100 points will count as a test grade for this unit.
 
There are no quizlet links for this unit as there are no formal tests or quizzes in this unit.
