 Grading Policy

Grades are based on in-class work, homework, essays, quizzes, class projects, and unit exams. Each assignment will have a point value. Students are responsible for their own work. Grades are available through the district’s Aeries program online. Students should check their grades online. Printouts are available upon request. Extra credit will be offered temporarily. However, it will not comprise more than 2% of the grade.

 Homework

I will assign homework 2-3 times per week.  Late homework will not be accepted. If you are absent, please turn the homework in on the day that you return. You have a week to make up any missed work. If it is not turned in with in the week, you will not get credit for the assignment. (See me if we need to make adjustments due to an extended absence.)

 Notebook

Assignments will be recorded in your Language Arts notebook. I will check your notebooks daily and will award points. I expect you to keep your notebook organized by creating a Table of Contents and keeping it up to date. The assignments in your notebook include in-class work and homework worth approximately 10% of your grade.

 Tests/Essays/Unit Projects

We will have a test, essay and/or a unit project at the end of every unit. This will add up to approximately 20% of your grade. We will also have vocabulary quizzes weekly.

 Final Assessment

At the end of every semester there will be a final assessment test. It is 10% of your total grade.

SSR Requirement

SSR stands for Silent Sustained Reading. We will all read our own books in class for 15 minutes on Mondays.

Bring in a book to class every Monday. If you do not bring something to read, you lose your points for the day.
Make sure that the book is appropriate for reading in class.
You must participate in order to receive credit.
There will be a book report due for your book each quarter. If you read more than one book, you can turn in 2 book reports and one will count as 20 points of extra credit!
Your book selection is due by next Monday, September 8th.

Absent Work

If you are absent, please make sure that you make up your work. I will post what we did in class online under my “homework” section (http://www.esperanzahs.net/apps/classes/ (Language Arts – Collins)). If you have missed a test or quiz, please see me immediately so that we can arrange a time for you to make it up. If you are going to be absent because of a planned activity, please tell me ahead of time! I will give you your assignments early! If you do not make up a missing assignment before a progress report (every 6 weeks), it will automatically become a 0. Please be careful to make up your work on time!

 Online Homework & Class Work

All homework and class work will be posted on the Esperanza website (esperanzahs.com). It is under the Academics tab in the drop down menu under Classes/Homework. On the Classes/Homework page, choose the Language Arts link.

 Late Work

Homework turned in over a week after you returned from your absence, will not be accepted. If it is a long-term assignment, such as an essay or project, it is due on the assigned day whether or not you are here. Please remember that you can EMAIL me, [email protected] with your assignment attached or you can turn it in ahead of time. After the deadline, you can still turn in the project for up to 70% of the total credit.

Contact Information Please email me with any questions that you have – [email protected] I check email daily.
